Physical Education at Douglas Creative Arts and Science Magnet School

Who is Mrs. Hamilton

Hi, my name is Kim Hamilton, or “Mrs. H.” I even answer to “Ms. PE” which is frequently used by many of our younger Douglas Dragons. I have been teaching at Wake County for 20 years of which 19 of those wonderful years have been here at Douglas. My how time flies by when you love what you are doing!

I am a National Board Certified teacher. I enjoy many different activities such as traveling with my family, SCUBA diving, and Snow Skiing.

Teaching Philosophy:

What does Physical Education look like? Physical Education is a necessary and integral part of the total curriculum. Here at Douglas we strive to integrate classroom concepts into all of our specialist programs. For example, colonial games, games from countries studied in the classroom, Native American games, and jump rope units using math skills are all just a few Physical Education activities that cross over and integrate classroom curriculum. Our students not only learn objectives from the classroom, but also participate in fun activities to help make connections in Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Science Technology, Media Center, and of course Physical Education.

I believe it is very important for our children to learn to enjoy physical activity while achieving skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. In my classes, I provide a variety of activities that are physically challenging, mentally motivating, emotionally healthy, and socially sound. I incorporate all students into the activities regardless of physical abilities. I believe in having fun!

In our K/1 curriculum general and personal space, locomotor skills, striking, throwing and catching are all stressed. Learning how to work in group settings and with partners is also a key part of the learning plan.  2/3 reinforces all of the above skills while also expanding into more complex lead up games, group cooperation activities, and beginning team sports. 4/5 explores more details of team sports, analyzing strategies that are used in games, creating rules.

A Quality Physical Education Program looks like:

  1. Develops positive attitudes towards self and others
  2. Creates active participation
  3. Requires problem solving skills
  4. Recognizes differences in student interests, potential, and cultures
  5. Develops personal skills

How can you help the Physical Education program here at Douglas?

  • Volunteer to help with our ‘Super Kid’s Days’ at the end of the year. We have thematic field days here that tie in all skills learned throughout the year in P.E. and our other curriculum content areas.
  • Help record and count donations for ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ each February.
  • Try to get out and exercise with your child. Go for walks, ride a bike, shoot some hoops, be active with you child.
  • Have fun and stay fit together. Support your child in sports activities
