Dance at Douglas Creative Arts and Science Elementary School follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for dance, K-5. Dance classes are based on creative movement principles rather than specific techniques like tap or ballet as you might find at a dance studio.

Creative movement allows children to move and learn through the engagement of the whole self. As they learn about and use the elements of dance (space time and energy/dynamics), they develop body awareness and control, and create and perform dances that are a means of communication and self-expression. Children explore ideas from science, social studies, math and language arts through movement, using dance to gain deeper understandings and make connections to other content areas.

Through dance education, students can also come to an understanding of their own culture and begin to respect dance as a part of the heritage of many cultures. As they learn and share dances from around the globe, as well as from their own communities, children gain skills and knowledge that will help them participate in a diverse society.
