What is a School Counselor?

A school counselor is a person that helps children solve many kinds of problems, both at home and at school.  The school counselor acts as a support person by being a “listening ear”.  The school counselor can also be supportive to the stuee3n’s family and teachers.

What does the School Counselor Do?

  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Classroom guidance
  • Parent education
  • Consultation with teachers
  • Administration of tests
  • Coordinates referrals to outside agencies

Counseling Groups can focus on many topics including:

  • Goal setting
  • Self-esteem
  • Friendships
  • Anger management

Students and Families can meet with the school counselor during the school day or at other arranged times.  Referrals can be made by parents, teachers, other school personnel, as well as students.

Children can experience problems or changes in their lives just as adults do.  It can affect them emotionally, physically, and academically.  Because we want them to grow and develop in a positive way, finding solutions to their problems or helping them to adjust to changes is very important.
