Academically Gifted

Welcome to the AG program at Douglas Elementary School

AG Specialist: Lisa Milliken
Schedule:  Wednesdays and Thursdays

About Mrs. Milliken:

Mrs. Milliken has taught AG at Douglas for 7 years. Prior to teaching AG Ms. Milliken was an assistant principal, an IRT, and taught grades 1-4.  When Ms. Milliken isn’t at school she loves to read, garden, and travel. She also has a husband and two sons that keep her busy.

The K-3 program:

Formal identification doesn’t usually take place until third grade. However, students in kindergarten through second grade are provided with differentiation as needed by the classroom teacher through consultation with the AG teacher.  High level learners in k-2 also participate in a resource program called KIT, which stands for Kids Into Thinking.

Though still not formally identified, third grade students begin to receive direct instruction from Mrs. Milliken, the AG teacher, through a program called Explorers. Several times during the year, Ms. Milliken teaches whole group lessons to all third grade classes in math and language arts. Students who do particularly well with this lesson  may be chosen to participate in a small group to extend the learning for several more weeks.

The 4-5 program:

Once students are formally identified in third grade they begin receiving service through a pull out program beginning in 4th grade.  Students come to resource class for at least 45 minutes per week for each area of identification ( math and/or reading)

In resource classes students work on enrichment units  based on the standard course of study for their grade level. Within the each unit we focus on the following:

  • Problem solving
  • Self directed learning
  • Effective oral/written communication
  • Product development commensurate with academic/intellectual ability
  • Self analysis of strengths, needs, and academic potential
  • Creativity
  • Higher order thinking skills
