PTA
NEWS
Dear Douglas Families,
On behalf of the PTA, Welcome! It is good to see the halls full of students and an
enthusiastic staff ready to greet them.
We welcome many new families and 22 new staff members to Douglas this
year, including our new Assistant Principal, Ms. Claudia Bazemore. If you see a new face in the hall, take a
moment to introduce yourself!
All parents are invited to Parent Information Night, which takes place on Sept. 18th,
beginning at 6:30pm in the gym. Douglas Staff Members and PTA Executive Committee
will be introduced, the PTA budget will be approved, and you will be introduced
to the PTA Dragon Fire Campaign. Parents will have the chance to meet
with teachers in their child's classroom after our general meeting. Parent/teacher sessions will begin at 7:05pm
and 7:35pm. We are looking forward to a
year full of activities from Arts Night coming up in October, to Cultural Arts
Programs, to our annual Winter Carnival and Silent Auction. Please let us
know if you have questions about the Douglas PTA and how you can be involved in
your child’s education!
See you in the halls,
Alice Spickard, PTA President, 877-0490 and Trish
Stutts, PTA President-Elect, 676-5456
If you are interested in joining the PTA, you can do
so at the meeting, or contact Carrie Johnson at msccjohnson@earthlink.net.
Membership is $10 for a family, or $6 per person.
Douglas Cookbook!
Did you forget to turn in your recipe last spring? Here's another chance! All Douglas families are encouraged to submit recipes for the Douglas Cookbook that is being printed this fall. If you have not sent in a recipe, please do so by September 6th. Recipe forms are on the PTA bulletin board across from the main office or you can email you recipes to armouw@earthlink.net

FUN
STUFF!
Arts
in the Community
Two wonderful opportunities to take advantage of:
"Wild Music" a traveling exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science downtown until Sept 16th - You will explore ways that animals make music. This exhibit is awesome! It has a jam room, hands -on instruments from around the world, listening centers and computers with instructions in English, Spanish and braille. Mrs. Zelasky highly recommends going to this exhibit!
Mrs. Zelasky has information on discounted Symphony tickets. Special Student Rates are available for students and their families for the 2007/2008 North Carolina Symphony Family Concerts and Holiday Pops concert. If you are interested, please email Mrs. Zelasky at szelasky@wcpss.net and she will send home a ticket order form with your child. The deadline for ordering will be Sept 14th. The concerts are: Nov 10th ("Bach to the Future" with Platypus Theatre) , Jan 5th (Where in the World is Wales?) and March 8th (Lemony Snicket's The Composer is Dead).
Success in School …
Join Dr. Ron Ferguson, an economist from Harvard and Director of the Achievement Gap Initiative, in a session for parents. Dr. Ferguson will share specific strategies which parents can use to help their child perform better.
The event is October 17 at 7 p.m. at Hillside High in Durham. For more information, call 531-1670.
The Dragon Theatre
I am very excited to announce that our Drama Club has been transformed into The Dragon Theatre. Our 2007-2008 season is CINDERELLA or It's Okay to be Different (to be performed in November), I Never Saw Another Butterfly (to be performed in February) and a musical (to be performed in May). Rehearsals will be held after school this year in the 'auditorium.' Auditions will be held for each individual production. Auditions for our first show are tentatively scheduled for September 18-20. Look for more information in the Monday folder on September 10th.
Odyssey of the Mind
Creative problem solving, teamwork in action, building, performing, thinking, creating… The Odyssey of the Mind teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun in the process.
Odyssey of the Mind teams will be forming for students in grades 3-5. If there is enough interest we will have a K-2 team this year too!
OM Interest Meetings. Please attend either:
Thurs., Sept 13 at 4pm in the Music Room or
