Calling All Parents, This means YOU!

The Douglas staff is winning. They have us by 15%, and their memberships are still coming. We need you to help us increase our percentage by joining the PTA. If you have forgotten or misplaced your membership form, please let us know. You can send a note to your child’s teacher or email us and we will get one to you. Let’s make this our best year ever for enrollment!

Art Room Supplies

Ms. Jabs is cleaning house and sorting all of her supplies. She is in need of several large, clear, stackable storage tubs. She's hoping to use more recycled materials this year and needs a place to put them! If you are able to help, please drop off the tubs in the art room, or check with Ms. Jabs if you have any questions.  Thank you.

Dinner and a Good Book – Join us!

Mark your calendars now and plan to dress appropriately because the forecast for Tuesday, October 13 is Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. The PTA is sponsoring a FREE spaghetti dinner from 6-6:45. Following dinner, we are offering the students and their families the chance to hear different books read by our very own teachers and staff during three 15 minute rotations from 7-7:55. There will be stories or excerpts of stories for all grade levels to enjoy. You may even be surprised to see the teachers dressed as a character from one of your favorite books.  Please plan to come and enjoy an evening filled with lotsa pasta and lotsa reading!

We will have our very own Douglas Dad’s serving the meal, and could use additional help in the kitchen.  E-mail Jenny Sturm at jsturmpremier@bellsouth.net or Garnett Webb at rodgarn@bellsouth.net if you are able to help set up for the meal, or help clean up.

The Book Fair will be open from 5:45-7:45pm for you to browse and purchase books for your family, or to purchase and donate to a Douglas teacher. Let’s make the spaghetti dinner and Book Fair one that will put our students On Top of Spaghetti.

Also - Volunteers are needed to staff our annual fall book fair.  If you would like to be a part of the fun, check your calendar and return the sign-up sheet in today's Monday folder to Wendy Sielaty, dwsielaty@earthlink.net

We Need To Update!

It's time to update our Douglas Brochure.  If you have graphic design experience and/or connections to design or printing services that might offer us a school discount, please contact Michelle Burrows at 881-1425 or by email at mburrows2@wcpss.net

BoxTops for Education

Thank you to those who have already turned in BoxTops. Deadline is October 20! The class that turns in the most BoxTops will win a special treat. Please neatly trim the General Mills BoxTops from participating products, put them in a plastic baggy with your child's and teacher's names on a piece of paper. Send them in to your child's teacher or drop them in the collection container outside the Parent Resource Center. Please make sure the expiration dates are clear on each trimmed BoxTop. For a complete list of participating products, please visit BoxTops4Education.com. If you have any questions, contact Laurie Lin at changlin@bellsouth.net.  Thank you!

DragonFire Campaign – Please help!

We’ve lit the flame and the DRAGON is smoking, but we need you to stoke the fires! It’s time for our DRAGONFIRE campaign to raise funds for our school. This years goal is $7,000. This money will help fund cultural arts programs, sponsorship of Odyssey of the Mind teams, monetary support for teachers and safety patrol equipment.

How does it work? We simply ask for donations to the fund. Your participation could be in the form of $1-$5 or as much as $20-$50. To reach our goal, we hope to have 80% of our families participating. The grade level that has the HIGHEST PARTICIPATION, wins a party!  All donations are tax-deductible and go directly to support Douglas.

“Odyssey” Information Meeting

An informational meeting about Odyssey of the Mind will be held on September 30th at 3:45 and October 1st at 8:15am, both in the Music Room. Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a wonderful way for your child to work as a team "thinking outside the box". There will be 5-7 children on a team with two coaches. The children will work on a "problem"  and solve this problem in a creative way. The competition will be on the first Saturday in March. If you are interested in your child being on the Douglas OM team, you must attend one of these meetings.  Thank you!

CLUBS, CLUBS, CLUBS!

Douglas has several clubs up and running this year. So far, we have the Dragon Chorus (music smart), Dragon Theater (body smart), Safety Patrol and Student Council (people smart), Computer Graphics (math smart) and Junior Librarians (word smart). Also in the works are a jump rope club (body smart) and an arts and crafts club (art smart). We also hope to have Science Olympiad (nature smart) and Odyssey of the Mind (math & people smart) teams. Parents are asking for more, especially for our K- 3 students, but our teachers are “maxed out”.  We’d love to have parents sponsor and run additional clubs at Douglas. It could be a Book Club, a chess club, a Gardening Club, a science club, a lego club, you name it! If you are a parent who is great with kids, has level 4 volunteer clearance, has the time to commit to a regular weekly or bi-weekly meeting day (either before school from 8-8:45 or after school from 4-4:45) and has an interest in managing a small club (with teacher advice/support), please contact Michelle Burrows at mburrows2@wcpss.net.

International Arts Night is Coming!!

This year’s Arts Night will take place on Tuesday, November 10th. This year we are focusing on arts from around the world. We are looking for multi-cultural presenters/performers! If you know a person or group that might be interested in doing a multicultural arts activity with groups of students and families, or if you know a person or group that might offer a multi-cultural arts performance, please contact Michelle Burrows at mburrows2@wcpss.net

Parent Quotes Needed!

As our magnet recruiting season approaches, we are getting ready for the Magnet Fair in November. We’d love to include some supportive parent quotations about our program in our materials. Quotes should be brief and can include your impressions of our school, the magnet theme of science/arts, impact on your child, our focus on multiple intelligences, your experience here. Please send quotes with your first and last name and the grades of your children to Michelle Burrows at mburrows2@wcpss.net.  Please note that quotes may be published with your name in marketing materials and videos.
