Welcome Back to School!

The PTA Executive Committee wants to welcome everyone back to another fun filled year at Douglas Elementary. If you are new to Douglas, we hope that you will find it to be a welcoming community. We have already begun filling the year with exciting activities, such as Arts Night and Fall Book Fair.  Keep a look out for future activities and dates.

Open House ~ September 24 at 6:30pm

All parents are welcome to Open House beginning at 6:30pm on Thursday, September 24. We will introduce the PTA Executive Committee, the Douglas staff, approve the PTA budget for 2009-2010, and kick-off our Dragon Fire Campaign.  You will also have an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and talk with teachers.

Volunteer Information

Thank you to everyone who signed up on the volunteer list at Meet & Greet. It was wonderful to see over 70 names, phone numbers, and emails. We are striving to get volunteer opportunities out to everyone over the next few weeks. It’s never too late to volunteer! If you see an opportunity that interests you, do not hesitate to ask any one on the PTA board or your teacher. Don’t forget ~ You must register with Wake County in order to volunteer.  This is very easy to do in the Media Center at Douglas.  Be sure to have your Social Security and Driver License numbers.

School Store

You will notice a change with the school store this year. Due to our school day starting earlier this year, the school store will not be opened in the mornings. The store will be open at community events when parents are present, such as Open House, Arts Night, etc.  If you have an immediate need (t-shirt or magnet purchase), please email Mandy Houghton at goluther@aol.com and we will make arrangements.

Carpool, buses, and walkers oh my!

The beginning of the school year brings the craziness of trying to organize carpool and buses as well as sending off our walkers every afternoon. In these first few weeks, please try to be patient. It’s not easy getting over 600 students in and out of school. Most important is our students safety! It will work itself out as students learn their carpool number or bus color and parents learn procedures. Thank you for your continued patience!

                  School Spirit Day
Show your school pride and wear your school colors every Friday. Wear green and yellow – the school colors - or your Douglas tshirt. Let's go Dragons and show your spirit!

McTeacher’s Night: Please make plans to come out to McDonald's for McTeacher’s Night. On Sept. 30, the restaurant at 7301 Six Forks Road will host this great fundraising event. See your favorite teachers and staff members serving up your favorite McDonald's treats. Join us between 5-8 PM, and 10% of the profits made  will go to our school. Take the night off from cooking and come out to support Douglas!!

HELP! Miss Levine's preschool special education class has a large number of girls. The class could use some girls toys for 2-4 year olds that are in good condition. If you have any type of relatively sturdy girl's toys that you can donate, please bring them to her classroom, #1106 (across from the office.) If you leave toys in the classroom when no one is in there, please put your name with them so she will know who they are from. Thank-you!

          Student Directory Forms
Included in your child’s Monday folder you will find a Douglas Student Directory form. This form is used to collect information on all the students that attend Douglas. This information is then turned into a printed directory distributed for free to every Douglas family. The information collected is ONLY used for the purpose of allowing Douglas parents to communicate with one another. This Directory also provides additional information about the events taking place this school year. Please look for this form and fill it out. It should be returned to your child’s teacher no later than September 11th. We hope to have the Directory completed and distributed by mid October.

PTA NEWS

It costs less than 3 cents a day to become a PTA member. 107 memberships were purchased at the Meet & Greet. This is approximately 1/3 of the Douglas family enrollment. We hope this number will increase over the next month and we need your participation to get us there.

Why join the Parent Teacher Association? To benefit your child by getting connected with the happenings in our school, meeting and building rapport with other parents and teachers, having the opportunity to effectively suggest change and playing an important role in the fundraising that provides building improvements, curriculum-based programs and social events.

If you have already taken this important step to join the Douglas PTA, we thank you!  If not, please consider doing so. In your child's Monday folder, there will be a PTA Membership form. Please fill this out and return it to your child's teacher along with your membership fee. When joining, you may choose one of two memberships, Family for $10.00 or Individual for $6.00.

Thank you for playing your part in furthering the high quality educational opportunities for all children at Douglas Elementary School.
