Hello Douglas Dragons,

Our next PTA meeting is coming up on Tuesday evening, March 4th, at 7pm.  Join the PTA Executive Committee and Dr. Spivey in the Media Center for

dessert and conversation.

We will hear a principal's report, decide how to spend PTA money (translation equipment or stage microphones), and use this time to hear from you:  your feedback and your questions.  Are you and your child having a good experience at Douglas?  We’d like to know.

Take this opportunity to join us!

I look forward to seeing you next week.

Sincerely,

Alice Spickard

PTA President

Promote reading for all children

Monday, March 3rd is Read Across America Day when we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday (which is actually March 2nd).  In that spirit, here are some tips parents can use to encourage children to read taken from the NEA website:  http://www.nea.org/readacross/resources/promotereading.html.

The successful parent employs a variety of strategies to encourage a child to read, and to keep reading.

Here are proven techniques you can use to teach your child that reading is valuable and enjoyable, and that promote reading for all children:

§         Set a good example as a reader - let kids see you reading every day.

§         Get a subscription in his or her name to an age-appropriate magazine for your child. When relatives and others ask for gift ideas, suggest magazine subscriptions, books, or a book store gift certificate.

§         Make reading fun - a time that you and your children look forward to spending together.

§         Check out The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease (New York: Penguin Books, 1995). It's loaded with fun tips and reading recommendations.

§         Keep lots of books, magazines, and newspapers around the house. Visit the library often and shop for books at garage and yard sales, swap meets, and used bookstores.

§         Don't fret if "Captain Underpants" has captivated your child rather than Robinson Crusoe. The important thing: he's reading! Encourage it and he's likely to move on to more sophisticated titles as he gets older.

Harris Teeter Fund Raising: buying Frozen Foods

77 people have linked their Harris Teeter VIC card to Douglas this year, which has raised over $250.00 for Douglas.  If you have not linked your card, simply go to the Douglas Website, go to PTA, Fundraising, click on Harris Teeter and follow to ‘Link your Card’.  You can also ask at the store for them to link your card, or call Susan Steltenpohl at 788-0941.

In March, Harris Teeter will donate even more money to our school if your card is linked and you buy any frozen foods!

Hurricanes Hockey Discount Tickets

Remember to take notice of the special rate on the April 2nd Carolina Hurricanes hockey game on the flyers that went home in February.  Every ticket ordered for the game during Spring Break against the Washington Capitals (currently our biggest challenge in the SE Division) will earn up to $10.00 for Douglas.

If you have lost your flyer or would like more, please call Susan Steltenpohl at 788-0941 or stop by the PTA office to get one.
