Save Those Plastic Grocery Bags!

Help us collect plastic grocery bags.  Just send them to school with your children - we'll do the rest!

We're collecting the bags to promote recycling, but we also have a chance to win a Trex bench for the school and $500.00 for an outdoor project.

Any bags the school collects between now and April 11 count toward our total, so send them in as often as you can!  The school with the most bins of bags wins!

Need help communicating with a child in your life?

Children who have a good relationship with the adults in their lives are more likely to turn to them when they are facing challenging situations.  When you talk to a child, remember to:

·         Listen to what the child says… their jokes, concerns, daily stories.  When your children talk to you, try to give them your full attention.  If possible, put aside whatever you’re doing, and really listen.

·         Let your children know you understand how they feel.  For instance, suppose your child complains of being left out of a game at recess.  You might say, “It sounds like your feelings were hurt when the other kids didn’t let you play.”  Then just listen and be supportive.

·         Make QUALITY TIME with children FUN.  Turn it into a game of questions and answers.  Use these conversation starters to do so.

o        What makes you angry/scared?

o        What was the best thing that happened to you today?

o        Where would you go, if you could travel anywhere in the world?

o        Do you feel safe at school?

o        What does success mean to you?

·         And most importantly, let your child know they can talk to you about anything…always.

This kind of communication builds bridges to your kids that will last a lifetime.

Ahoy Mates,

Field Days are Coming!

Pirate Fun Super Kids Day 2008 is right around the corner.  We need many volunteers to make this a hit with our children.  The theme this year focuses on pirates from North Carolina’s past.  Please have your child come dressed as a pirate on their field day.

Parent support is important for this to be a successful event.  Watch for volunteer sign ups coming soon.  Your children will always remember you being there running a station!  Put it on the calendar today and plan on helping out.

Dates for Pirate Fun Super Kids Day:

April 8 - K and 1st Grades,         9:30 – 11:30 am

April 8 - 2nd and 3rd Grades,       1:00 – 3:00 pm

April 9 - 4th and 5th Grades        9:30 – 11:30 am

Rain Dates:

April 10 - K and 1st Grades,       9:30 – 11:30 am

April 10 - 2nd and 3rd Grades,     1:00 – 3:00 pm

April 11 - 4th and 5th Graders,  9:30 – 11:30 am

We appreciate all your support and caring for our programs here at Douglas.  Look for the volunteer sign up letter to come home with your children soon!  For more information or questions, contact Tammy Clarke, Field Day Coordinator, at tclarke4@nc.rr.com or at 919 250-0146.
