You Are My Sunshine…

The Sunshine Committee is a group of staff members at Douglas Elementary School.  Part of what we do is look for ways to improve and brighten the atmosphere of the school for everyone.  We also look for ways to build a feeling of community for students and staff.

In an effort to help instill in the students a feeling of community and to learn the enjoyment of giving back to all those who help them here at Douglas, we have matched classrooms up with a support staff person here at Douglas who is not in one specific class, but works daily to help the school as a whole. It is impossible for any one class or one family to show their appreciation to everyone that contributes to the success of our students. We hope that this will be an easy way to thank people, but make a big difference to everyone. Little acts of kindness can go a long!

We suggest that your child offer random acts of kindness such as a making a card, snack or a special thank you in the hallway.   Please know that we are not asking parents to take on a lot more than they already do.   We appreciate everything the parents do for the staff all yeayr long! This is intended to be a student led activity, but they may need a little assistance from you!

You may contact your child’s teacher or room parent to find out who your class has adopted.  The “adoption” will last through this school year. If you have any questions, please contact the Sunshine Committee (Ruby Shernrshern@wcpss.net or Cyndi Lynn – clynn@wcpss.net)

PBS – It’s not just a TV Channel

You might be wondering what is "PBS".  PBS stands for Positive Behavior support.  Our school made the decision that we wanted to be a PBS school.  That doesn't mean that each teacher wasn't already doing components of Positive Behavior individually.  What it does mean is that we want to all use the same language and have the same expectations in each area of the school.  There is a core team of PBS that is being trained and they bring that information back to the staff and we make decisions that are best for our students and school.  PBS isn't just about discipline, although that is part of it.  The idea is that we teach the expectations school wide, teach often, and have positive reenforcers as well as consequences for not following those expectations. We have been hard at work already this year. We have created the matrix of expectations for our school and developed lesson plans for teaching for each area of the school. We have a core team being trained and have also sent representatives for a special data training called SWIS. From the data, we will be able to track where discipline problems occur, time of day, number of discipline referrals per student, etc. and use that data to better "reach" our students.  Also, we have begun to create signs and posters to remind the students of the expectations, and created a school discipline referral form. Although many things we do are not always instantly visible, much work is being done to continue to make Douglas the wonderful school that it is.  Please know that the PBS process takes three-five years to get everything going and in place.  The PBS team will update you periodically.  If you ever have concerns regarding PBS, we do have a mailbox in the mailroom.  We would like to leave you with this:

THANK YOU HARRIS TEETER!!

A huge thanks to Harris Teeter at North Hills and Mr. James Pinto, store manager, for providing Harry the dinosaur and all the ice cream and school supplies last week!   All the kids, staff and teachers had the chance to visit Harry and hear about the Together in Education Program.  Remember to help out Douglas by visiting our website and clicking on "fundraising" and choosing the Harris Teeter option. You can also visit the store and get them to help you.
