“The Essentials Behind Douglas”

Installment #8: Essential Evidence: Collaboration!

Eighth in 10-part series

This week, we’ll take a look at the seventh A+ Essential, collaboration.  So what exactly is collaboration?  It can be difficult to define, but one definition says that collaboration is a dynamic process that produces a synthesis of different perspectives, a coming together of different ideas.  Often the words teamwork and collaboration are used interchangeably but, really, collaboration is one important aspect of teamwork.

At Douglas, collaboration generally includes shared planning, making decisions, solving problems, setting goals, assuming responsibility, working together cooperatively, and communicating openly.  Teachers and specialists collaborate together to create integrated lessons that bring together the arts, science and the core curriculum.  This in turn makes meaningful connections for their students.  We value our collaboration time and create intentional opportunities so that it will happen regularly. This collaborative time is given priority by the administration to demonstrate its value.  And it’s because of these wonderful shared opportunities for our teachers that the students at Douglas are treated to engaging, integrated learning.  This collaborative spirit helps Douglas to maintain a strong, positive environment.  Collaborating together to achieve a common goal helps us to feel like we are working with family, and that makes Douglas a very special place to be.

We’re nearing the end of the series.  In next week’s installment we’ll discuss the last A+ Essential, the Arts.

Thank You Green Team!

Thank you to all of the families that came out and volunteered to make our first workday successful on November 3, 2007.  We made a great deal of progress on our campus To-Do List!  Check out the new plantings on either side of the driveway up to the modular.  We installed: Forsythia, Virginia Sweetspire, Daylilies, Cannas and Iris; all plants that will add color and help control erosion on those banks.  We also mulched and got started transplanting Abelias and Nandinas from the Cafeteria Courtyard around the Modular in order to soften and make that area more attractive for both people and wildlife.  A lot of hard work was done by; Amy and Stacy Allen, Chase A., Susan Cavanagh, Anthony DiGiovanni, Sam D., Debbie Farley, Caroline F.,  Marcie and Doug Hammond, Scott Mouw, Olivia P., Cameron P., Debbie Parnell, Perry Schneider, Mark Stevens, Margie Stith, Gracie Z. and Henrietta Zalkind.  Fall is the best time for planting, so if you can’t make our workdays and want to help, please call 870-0566 or email me at annawilder.nd@gmail.com and I will gladly let you know about ongoing chores to be done around our Douglas Campus.

Thank you, as well, to Margie Stith, Andrew S. and Austin S. for scraping and repainting the old wooden bench near the cafeteria entrance (where the walkers are released each afternoon).
