ARTS NIGHT

It’s Coming…. Douglas’ Multiple Intelligence Night!!

Landscapes and Poetry?

 Landscapes and Math?

Landscapes and Music?

To coincide with the October 21st opening of a new exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art, “Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism”, Douglas’ MI Night will bring landscapes to life as the entire Douglas Family experiences integration of the arts and Multiple Intelligences first-hand.

Come and explore landscapes as you’ve never experienced them before.  After dinner and the pig-kissing, we’ll start together with a common experience in the gym before everyone moves out to one of eight different activities that will each highlight an intelligence area.  After 40 minutes of working together in small groups to create a product, we’ll come back together in the gym and enjoy a sharing from each group.

We hope that you’ll join us for a fun-filled, integrated evening!!

Tuesday, October 23rd

5:00 – 7:30 Book Fair in Media

5:00 – 6:00 Dinner in Cafeteria

6:00 – 6:15 Pig- Kissing in Gym

6:15 – 8:15 MI Night Activities

Student Council News

The Douglas Student Council continues to earn money for the school by recycling inkjet printer cartridges.  Please do not throw those cartridges away!  Instead, send them to school with your child and we will take care of them for you.  Our inkjet recycling bin is located outside of the media center if you would like to personally drop them off.  Thank you!

JDRF

Our annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) fundraiser has begun.  JDRF is dedicated to funding research to find a cure for Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.  One of our students, Tucker Moore, has lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was 6 years old.  We want to help Tucker, and others with diabetes find a cure.

You received a letter with an envelope last week for the Douglas Walk to Cure Diabetes.  On Friday, 11/2/07, our students will be able to participate in our own Walk to Cure Diabetes during recess time.  Participating students will seek donations/sponsorship to walk 6 laps around the playground.  Collection envelopes will be due on Friday, 10/26/07.  We will keep you updated with our campaign and the other ways you can help.

Spirit Night at McDonald’s

Don’t forget – Tuesday, October 16, is McTeacher’s Night at McDonald’s at 6213 Falls of Neuse Road.  Come on out for dinner from 5-8 pm and spend time with your school friends. This is the largest Spirit Night we do every year, so let’s make it even better this year.  See you at the Golden Arches!

Character Corner

The character trait for the month of October is RESPECT!

The definition of respect is showing high regard for authority, for other people, for self, for property, for animals, and for country.   Understanding that all people have value as human beings.

Recommended Readings:

Stellaluna, Cannon

Frederick, Lionni

Arthur’s Nose, Brown

Amazing Grace, Hoffman

Sarah, Plain and Tall, McLachian

Activities to do at home:

·          Draw a picture of a person showing respect or disrespect.

·          Have your child practice using good manners and catch him/her doing it.

·          Have your child make a collage with pictures from magazines and newspapers where people are showing respect for each other.

·          Have your child create a short story (either verbally or in writing) about people showing respect for each other.

·          Discuss how we want people to speak to us.  Talk about how language, including tone of voice can show respect.

Help Your Child Succeed

As a parent, do you want to take a more active role in your child's education and in turn work to eliminate the achievement gap?  If you are, join us for a meeting held by the Harriett B. Webster Task Force for Student Success.  The meeting will be held at 6:00 pm on Oct. 16, 2007 at:

Saint Matthew A.M.E Church

1629 Bennett St. Raleigh, NC. 27609  (919)834-0893 for more information or directions. Feel free to also contact Mrs. LaVerne Harrison. dlharrison@wcpss.net

You are also invited to "A Conversation with Dr. Ron Ferguson" How Parents Can Help Their Child Succeed in School.  He will be speaking at Hillside High School October 17, 2007 7:00pm-9:00 pm. 3727 Fayetteville St. Durham, NC  27707.

Ferguson, an economist from Harvard, is the Director of the Achievement Gap Initiative, which is dedicated to raising achievement for all children while narrowing racial, ethnic and socio-economic gaps.  Dr. Ferguson will share specific strategies which parents can use to help their child perform better. This session is also helpful to human service professionals, educators and community leaders. The seminar is free and endorsed by your school district.

Dragon Bites” Cookbook Orders

The Douglas Cookbook has been proofed and sent to the publisher.  448 delicious recipes have been collected and included for your enjoyment.  The cookbook committee is excited about the result and expects that you will love it too. The cookbooks will take 6-8 weeks for production and we anticipate the shipment anytime from Thanksgiving to the first week of December.  This will depend on the company’s orders and any unforeseen problems with the cookbook layout.

We are pre-selling cookbooks now with a special multi-book price.  An order of a single book is $12.50, but now until November 20th, if you order 2 or more books, the price is $10.00 each.  So think about holiday gifts for family and friends and order multiple copies.  After November 20th, all books will be sold for $12.50 each.  Don’t wait! Only 500 copies available.

Need an order form?  You or your student can pick one up in the main office or email armouw@earthlink.net and request a cookbook order form.  Cash or checks are accepted.

Attention 2nd Grade Parents!

If you ever wanted to volunteer in the art room, the next few weeks would be an EXCELLENT time!  The second graders will be making musical instruments in art class on October 12, 18, 19, 22, and 23, from 9:20-10:15.  We have introduced them to the project, and had them conceptualize their instruments.  They have been asked to bring in materials for their instruments on their art day.  We do have some materials available for them.  The biggest need right now is for ADULT HELPERS!  We will need help with "construction", ie hot glue guns, attachments, etc.  In fact, if anyone can come and bring glue guns (or other attaching tools) with them, it would be even better.  Please email me at wjabs@wcpss.net  or send in a note with your child.

EAT WELL AND GIVE MONEY BACK TO DOUGLAS!

Ever want to try a Chick-fil-A party tray?  When placing your order for any of the trays at the North Hills Chick-fil-A (510-0100 or www.chickfila.com/northhills), let them know you are from Douglas.  We receive up to 6 dollars back from some of the trays!  Several to choose from!  Curbside pickup is available at North Hills Chick-Fil-A for catering and party trays.

DRAGON FIRE UPDATE:

Thanks to our Douglas community for participating in our Fall Fundraiser.  We are close to reaching both our participation and financial goals.  Please return all donations by the end of the week!
