ATTENDANCE COUNTS! PLEASE BE INFORMED

This school year, Douglas has an Attendance Committee, whose members are Dr. Susan Spivey, Principal; Ms. Claudia Bazemore, Assistant Principal; Mrs. Kelli Williams, Counselor; Mrs. Colleen Lerch, NCWISE Data Manager; Mrs. Violet Manson, School Nurse and Mrs. Jeannette McNeal, School Social Worker.  The Douglas staff has received a copy of this school year’s attendance plan.  Attendance letters are mailed to parents/guardians when a child has 6 and 10 unexcused absences.  We need parents to continue to send your children to school after an absence with a written, signed note citing the date and reason for the absence within two (2) days of the student’s return to school. Parents of students who accrue 25 excused and unexcused absences will receive a letter from us as well.

To improve a student’s attendance, the committee will schedule conferences with the parents/guardians, the child’s teacher and the committee after a student accrues 10 or more unexcused absences.  Research shows that this joint collaboration between the parents/guardians and the school staff reduces absenteeism and improves students’ academic performance.  Did you know that if a student misses ten days of school, that student has missed sixty-five hours of instruction?  Can you imagine bringing home a paycheck with those types of deductions?  As time passes, some students are unable to make up that missed instructional time and gaps in their learning could occur.

You can reach Jeannette McNeal at 609-4326 (c), 571-6950 (o) and/or jmcneal@wcpss.net.  We look forward to YOUR children, OUR students’ continued academic and attendance success!

What in the world is the … Bottle Shop?

One of our Winter Carnival specials is our famous Bottle Shop!   When you visit the Bottle Shop at our Carnival you pick a number and take your chances on winning a bottle!  You might receive a very cool cream soda or root beer; fingernail polish or bubble bath.  Maybe you’ll win a spicy sauce, zesty marinade, yellow mustard or even a bottle pop lollipop.  Perhaps a lotion or shampoo will go home with you.  You never know how lucky you will be the Bottle Shop!

We need your help!  Donations are needed so that the shelves in our Bottle Shop will be full by Carnival time.  Please send in donations of bottles full of all of the things you find at the store:  grocery items such as sauces and soda to bubble baths and shampoos.  Maybe you’ll find a bottle filled with M&Ms at the Dollar Store, or maybe you’d like to stuff a clean new bottle with small trinkets that our students will enjoy winning or perhaps fill a new bottle with some spare change.  All donations are accepted, but please do not send in your empty recycling bottles and please do not send in any bottles containing cleaning supplies, hazardous materials (no fuel, oil, etc.), or alcoholic products.

All bottles may be sent in with your child or placed in the main office.  Questions? Please contact Tammy Clarke: 250-0146

Many thanks!
