Douglas Dragoneer
Douglas A+ Creative Arts and Science Magnet Elementary School
Issue I, Volume 1 August
24, 2005
The 2005-2006 school year is underway. We have worked tirelessly this summer to get the new Douglas School ready to open. Even though much was accomplished this summer, much work needs to be done. We ask you to continue to be patient as the construction continues.
Carpool drop off and pick up is in the circular drive in front of the school. Please stay in your lane and with your vehicle during carpool times. Pull all the way up and the teachers and safety patrol members on duty will open car doors for you. Please do not pull out and around the vehicle in front of you. Do not make a left turn in or out of the carpool lane. We ask that you circle the block instead of making a left turn during carpool time. PM carpool requires a carpool tag and number. Please sign up in the office if you haven’t done so already.
There are many new staff members at Douglas School this year. A roster is provided on the back of this newsletter for your convenience.
Parents are welcome to come to Douglas and enjoy lunch with their son or daughter. We do ask, however, that you wait until September 12 before you make any plans to join your child for lunch at school. It is important that we establish strong routines during these first few weeks, especially now that we are in our brand new school.
Each student will bring home a Student Information Card on the first day of school. Please make sure the information provided is accurate and legible. We need a minimum of two contacts for authorized persons who can pick your child up from school. The card should be returned to school as soon as possible.
Each student will have an established end of school day routine (bus, walk, carpool). Any change in this routine requires advance notice in writing. Please send a note to school with your child stating the change. For the safety of our students, calls to the office requesting a change in routine will not be accepted.
For 3rd,
4th, and fifth graders:
Odyssey of
the Mind is an
international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem-solving
opportunities for students. Through solving open-ended problems, students
develop creative-thinking skills that can be applied to real life situations.
Teams from throughout the U.S. and more than 20 other countries participate in
the program. There will be two parent information meetings: September 12th at
8:00am and September 13th at 4:00pm.
You and your child
must attend one of those meetings to become a member on the Douglas Odyssey of
the Mind team. Contact Mrs.
Susan Zelasky at SZELASKY@wcpss.net
or 881-4894 with any additional
questions
Our phones are working, but there are still some glitches. We apologize if you call and are unable to get through or are disconnected. Please help us by sending notes to school with your child to ensure that your communication is received.
The Douglas Dragoneer, our parent newsletter, will be published weekly. Beginning with our next issue, we will send it home on the first day of the week in the Monday folder. We will copy it on green paper so that it is easy to spot. It will be limited to a single sheet of paper and we will begin posting the newsletter on our website soon.
