Our Mission and Vision Statements

Our Mission

The mission of Douglas Elementary Creative Arts and Science is to teach the NC Standard Course of Study challenging all students to reach their potential. Students develop the necessary skills, learn the appropriate values, and acquire the habits vital for becoming responsible, well-rounded decision makers.  By building a school community where mutual respect is as important as knowledge, our children will learn more than just the basics as faculty, staff, and parents share in and demonstrate enthusiasm for the learning process.

Vision Statement

Douglas Elementary Creative Arts and Science is a culturally diverse community that is committed to the growth and development of the whole child.  Through the use of interdisciplinary collaboration, we are committed to planning instruction that builds on the uniqueness of each child. We strive to make Douglas a place where teachers, staff, and parents:

  • Recognize the focus of our work centers on the student
  • Work as a team with a common purpose and well-defined goals
  • Monitor each student’s academic progress and social/emotional growth.
  • Rely on the standard state curriculum as the core of our teaching, while weaving other key elements into the fabric of the learning process.
  • Live what we teach, practice what we preach.

Statement of Beliefs

As a learning community, the school believes:

  • Each child holds more potential than we can measure,
  • All children are capable of achieving through multiple intelligences,
  • A successful school is one that models and promotes mutual respect,
  • Students reach their greatest potential when community, staff, parents, and students work in partnership,
  • Collaborative interdisciplinary planning is essential to effective instruction,
  • A culturally diverse population enriches the school environment,
  • Total school improvement occurs as a result of continuous evaluation,
  • Educational practices are always changing and evolving.
