Douglas Carpool and Traffic Procedures
2

All students who carpool, need to be dropped off and picked up in the carpool loop in front of the school.  There will be no exceptions to this procedure because dropping students off at the side of the school, across from the school, at the modular, or in the parking lot is not safe.  When you come through the line, a staff member or Safety Patroller will be there to greet you and open the door for your children to exit on to the sidewalk.  Please do not let the children out before a staff member or Safety Patroller meets you at the vehicle.  A staff member will then supervise the children entering the building where other staff members and Safety Patrollers will supervise them safely to their classrooms.  We know kindergarten parents are concerned, but until we are sure every student knows the way to his/her room, staff members will be right there to help.  If you have an appointment to see your child’s teacher, please park in a designated parking space, walk with your child to the office, sign in and get your visitors badge.  Remember you must sign-in at the office and get a badge before going to a classroom, at all times during the day, even before and after school.

Please enter the carpool lane from the Lambeth Dr. direction instead of making a left turn into the lane.  When in the carpool lane, stay with your car and do not pull out and around the vehicle in front of you.  When exiting carpool, only right turns will be permitted during carpool time to lessen congestion.  No LEFT TURNS – Please.

At the end of the day, all of our carpool students will gather in the cafeteria and will be loaded in the carpool loop as their car comes through the line.  We have a well-organized system for dismissal and you can be sure that the service will get faster and better as our children become more familiar with the process.  In order to ensure their safety, we require that you keep the special Douglas tag in your window at all times. You will register for your carpool cards at Meet and Greet (in the gym), in the office or in the line the first week of school. When you register, you will be given the official window marker. No child will be permitted to get in a car without a card, so it is imperative that you register. If there are several family members that may be coming through the line, we will give you as many cards as you need for your family. Students are to be picked up from carpool between 3:45-4:00.

For the safety of your child please do not park at the street curb and motion for your child to meet you. The staff on duty has been instructed to not allow students to cross the carpool lane or the street to meet parked cars.  Please observe the carpool policy and join us in the carpool lane.

We ask your support in not signing students out after 3:30 p.m.  Students miss the last few minutes of instruction and this often causes unsafe situations during dismissal.  We ask everyone to use the carpool procedure for safety and efficiency.  Please do not park and walk up to the carpool area to pick up your child.  Parking along Ortega and crossing the street causes congestion and is not safe.  And please, do not go to a classroom to pick up a child. Teachers are instructed not to let students leave the room unless they receive a call from the office.  The instructional day lasts until 3:45.  We use every minute of this time for meaningful activities.  Please don’t stop by the office 10 or 15 minutes early to sign out your child.  Calling the classroom is disruptive to the learning environment and your child misses valuable instruction as well.  Again, we ask that you do not sign out your children from 3:30 to 3:45.

Parking is available in the Cafeteria Parking Lot and Gym Parking Lot.  Please avoid parking on the street as much as possible.  Please observe the No Parking signs along Ortega Drive.

The intent is to make arrival and dismissal as efficient and smooth as possible; however, we cannot do it without everyone’s cooperation and we are confident that we will have that.  The ultimate goal is the safety of all our students at Douglas.
